Eric Khobung – EK Interior Design
Design Your Dream Home to Include Your Past
An Ohio interior designer shares future-focused style advice that embraces the past while making room for the present
Interior designer Eric Khobung believes the right interior design should be a reflection of the people who live in the house. “It should be purposeful and intentional, where all of the elements fit together cohesively,” he says. The owner of EK Interior Design says his role is to understand the big picture and also find solutions that are tailored to the individual homeowner.
Catalysts for creativity. Khobung, whose father was a contractor, grew up witnessing how a home can change people’s lives. Although he studied both English literature and law as a way to help people, he realized that neither field offered him the creative outlet he craved. Khobung turned to interior design, something he had always loved.
“Being an interior designer is a perfect marriage of helping people achieve their dream and being a part of something creative that’s constantly changing and evolving,” he says. He opened EK Interior Design, working with Troy Slabaugh, who handles administration, in 2019.
Personalized design. Khobung believes that turning a house into a home is a very personal process. “It should be a reflection of the people who live there, a place where the past, daily life and the future coexist harmoniously,” he says. To Khobung, this means treasuring what you love from the past while also adapting to meet the present and the future. “That is when design becomes exciting,” he says.
Looking for ways to personalize your home’s interior? Khobung has some tips below.
Design for how you want to use a space. “Every room should have a purpose,” Khobung says.
These homeowners in Stow asked Khobung for an uncluttered office and library space. “They wanted it to be soothing, with minimal distractions,” he says. He expanded the existing office slightly, then added neutral walls and drapes in a relaxing color palette for a warm backdrop. “It’s Zoom-friendly,” Khobung says. A clean-lined desk with room for two to work, storage for books, paperwork and office essentials, and a minimum of accessories keep the space looking professional and clutter-free.
Opt for what fits your personal taste rather than current trends. “Trends come and go,” Khobung says. “What’s in your space should be your story and what makes you happy.”
The owners of this home in Hudson have a style that’s a little bit farmhouse but also contemporary, clean and light. One of their requests was a grand entry to the living room that fit these parameters.
Khobung started overhead, creating a shiplap-style frame for each pendant light in the hall. “It draws the eye and leads you in a specific direction,” he says. He used the same shiplap-inspired treatment on the walls, alternating directions to add interest. Throw rugs offer the final touch. Khobung describes them as having a Moroccan essence while also feeling very American.
Invest in high-quality, custom furniture. “It’s expensive, but it’s worth it in the long run,” Khobung says. “You won’t be replacing it over and over.”
The owner of this home in Montrose wanted her seating area in the living room to be simple and fresh, but also in a style that wouldn’t become dated. She also had specific requests for height and firmness and wanted a durable yet luxurious fabric and a minimal number of pillows. Khobung responded by designing a custom couch and loveseat. Both pieces have a seating height of 21 inches rather than the usual 18 and are not as deep. “It’s beautiful and functional and invites you to sit,” Khobung says.
